Susumaniello is a very rare grape variety found only in Salento, Puglia. Meaning “little donkey” in the local dialect, the name refers to the large bunches of grapes that hang from the vines like the heavy loads carried by donkeys.
All of the estate’s wines feature a quartet of little crosses on their labels – this was the original and distinctive signature of the first illiterate owner on the property deeds – in a lovely nod to their humble origins.
A wine with great character: sensations of black and red berries are backed by spicy notes, hints of licorice and cocoa and notes of eucalyptus. It is a full-bodied but not heavy wine, extremely satisfying and easy to drink. Delicious now, and will age well.
