A medium-bodied red with delicious, crunchy cherry flavours, touches of dried fruits, fine tannins and a fresh, mouth-watering finish.
Barbera is the third most widely planted variety in Northern Italy after Sangiovese and Montepulciano. It is quite a prolific variety, rather like Merlot, and responds well to pruning, which improves the concentration and quality of fruit.
Riva Leone Barbera enjoys DOC status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), one of Italy's quality kitemarks, which requires that a wine satisfies a defined quality standard and be produced within the specified region, with stringent rules regarding permitted grape varieties, harvest yields, minimum ageing, use of barrels, minimum alcohol content, etc.
This wine is great with cold meats and anti-pasti, though stands up equally well to big hearty caseroles and rich pasta dishes.
