Catena Zapata Birth of Cabernet Sauvignon – A Landmark Argentine Red

Bodega Catena Zapata has long been the standard-bearer for serious winemaking in Argentina, and Birth of Cabernet Sauvignon is among the most compelling wines the estate produces. Structured, concentrated, and built for the long haul, this is a Cabernet Sauvignon that holds its own against the finest examples from anywhere in the world.

Sourced from select high-altitude vineyard blocks in Luján de Cuyo and the Valle de Uco, the grapes are grown at elevations exceeding 900 metres above sea level. Cooler temperatures at altitude slow the ripening process, allowing the fruit to reach full phenolic maturity while retaining the firm natural acidity and tannin structure that define this wine's remarkable backbone and ageing potential.

Deep inky ruby in the glass with a violet rim. The nose delivers layers of blackcurrant, cassis, and dark plum alongside cedar, tobacco leaf, pencil shavings, and a mineral graphite note. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured with concentrated fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a finish of outstanding length. Decant for at least 45 minutes and serve at 17–18°C in a large Bordeaux glass. Pairs beautifully with prime rib, chargrilled sirloin, slow-roasted lamb, venison, and aged hard cheeses.
